What is Pokemon?

Pokemon (Pocket Monsters) is a Japanese media franchise set in a world where humans and creatures, called Pokemon, coexist. It originated as a pair of role-playing games developed by Game Freak and founded by Satoshi Tajiri on the Gameboy in Febuary 27 in 1996, but expanded to include trading cards, anime, movies, and more. All other mainline games are also released

The original games contained 151 species of Pokemon, but since each generation introduced more species, there are now  1,025 species as of January 2025.

Pokémon video games have been released in a wide variety of genres. The role-playing games(RPGs) developed by Game Freak are considered the core series of the franchise. Various spin-off games also exist, such as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon , a roguelike series, Pokémon Ranger, an action RPG series, and Detective Pikachu (2018), an adventure game.

Gameplay

In each mainline game, the player takes the role of a Pokémon Trainer with 3 main goals:

  1. Travel and explore the Pokémon world
  2. Discover and catch each Pokemon species in order to compltete their Pokédex
  3. Train a team of up to six Pokemon at a time and have them engage in battles

Trainer's pokemon can engage in battles against opposing pokemon and use items to their advantage. Pokemon faint upon being defeated, and can then be rejuvenated at a Poké Center.

Pokemon can be leveled up in gyms. Players can also earn gym badges by wining against gym leaders. Collecting 8 badges allows players into the Pokémon League, where they can fight the elite four.
